CLIMATE - Cleaning Innovative Mediterranean Action : reducing waste to boost economies

Méditerranée (Lebanon, Tunisia, Italy)

Titre : CLIMATE - Cleaning Innovative Mediterranean Action : reducing waste to boost economies

Pays : Méditerranée (Lebanon, Tunisia, Italy)

Durée : 15/09 / 2019 // 14 / 09/2022

Contexte
The increasingly pressing need to find sustainable methods for separate collection is clearly expressed in the "Report on waste management at local and regional level in the Mediterranean region" published in 2014 by the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM). Indeed, if by 2020 most European states will recycle at least 50% of municipal waste, a similar forecast does not seem possible, however, with regard to the North African countries, especially Lebanon and Tunisia, two of the project’s intervention countries. The situation of Italy, the third partner country, is still unsatisfactory, despite some excellent examples such as the Municipality of Sestri Levante with its 75% of recycled waste.

Descriptif
The CLIMA project aims to address the environmental, economic and social problems caused by the bad management of organic waste in the three Mediterranean countries. The aim is twofold : on the one hand, to increase the separate collection and treatment of its organic component useful to be resold in local markets and, on the other, to generate less waste, also through awareness campaigns aimed at politicians and citizens. In this collective effort, municipalities such as Sestri Levante - which has reached 75.76% of recycled waste - can be a valuable resource of good practices.
