Drawing on over 15 years of experience with the Community Management of Protected Areas for Conservation (COMPACT) initiative to engage indigenous and local communities in conservation and governance of World Heritage, a COMPACT programme will be initiated at a new World Heritage site in the Southern Africa Region to provide small-grants for community-based conservation and livelihood activities. The project aims to improve the state of conservation of World Heritage properties, by increased community involvement and direct economic benefits to local communities, which is among the global and regional priorities endorsed by the Governing Bodies of the World Heritage Convention.
