The floral biology of the species Ipomoea hederifolia L. and Ipomoea quamoclit L., was studied, respectively, in the Fazenda Santa Elisa and Fazenda Santa Genebra, both in the Campinas Metropolitan Area, São Paulo. I. Hederifolia presents red tubular flowers, exposed outside from the foliage, odorless and with great distance between the sexual elements and the food source. I. Hederifolia was considered predominanthy ornithophilous for it is visited by four species of hummingbirds : Amazilia lacteal, Calliphlox amethystine, Eupetomena macroura and Phaethornis pretrei. A fifth species of hummingbird, not identified, was also observed, visiting and possibly pollinating flowers of I. Hederifolia ; however, the most effective pollinator of that species. Some butterflies were also observed in the flowers of I. Hederifolia but, taking into account the low fre quency of these visits, the butterflies were considered to be only occasional pollinators. Xylocopa sp. is a nectar robber of I. Hederifolia. The pollen grain of I. hederifolia is spherical with spines distributed over all the grain¿s surface. The large size and the ornamentation of the grain may be related to the kind of pollinator. I. hederifolia presents a high degree of self-compatibility and apomixes does no occur. Nevertheless, this species is not necessarily autogamic, since it also reproduces by alogamy... Note : The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
