The Peruvian coast is characterized by its aridity and low rainfall, with a water deficit in most of year. In the Rimac river basin, water demand is higher for population use, followed by agricultural use, mining use and industrial activity ; however, the use of this resource is not regulated and no studies have been conducted on ecological flows in the basin. Nowadays, there is a need to opt for an environmental management solution for the basin that guarantees the sustainability of the fluvial ecosystem (Palau, 2004). This proposal must contemplate, according to the characteristics of each, at least two components : an Ecological Flow Regime, that is, a regime of minimum flows determined by a temporal variability factor according to its hydrological regime, the biological community present and its development, the uses of the resource by the communities, its cultural value, etc. ; in addition, to control water quality through physical - chemical and biological parameters.The Regime of Ecological Flows can be obtained following diverse methods, classified according to characteristics or particularities of the river, or according to the parameters to be used in the calculation process. These methods are classified into : hydrological methods, hydraulic methods, eco-hydraulic methods or simulation of habitat and holistic methods.In the present investigation, the hydrological method of the Basic Flow of Maintenance is used to determine the Regime of Ecological Flows in the Rimac river basin based on flow records of the Chosica, Sheque and Tamboraque Hydrometric Stations. Likewise, the Reference Ecological Flows established by the National Water Authority were calculated by a statistical method, in order to compare both results Furthermore, the results of surface water quality monitoring carried out by state entities were analyzed to verify compliance with the National Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water Bodies (ECA) in points close to the Hydrometric Stations of Chosica, Sheque, and Tamboraque, calculate the mass loads of the pollutants and propose minimum circulating flows in such a way that the concentrations of said pollutants are lower than the RCTs, especially in the dry season months, where high concentrations are expected due to low dilution flow rates.
