Résumé
This thesis shows the importance of ecosystem services, provision and regulation, of the groundwater and aquifers related to water security and agricultural production in rural areas in Brazil. It outlines that some initiatives can be taken by water resources management to adapt to the global climate change. Using data from the 2006 and 2017 Agricultural Census, the Water Insecurity Index (IIH) was calculated for the municipalities and from the absence of water sources within the agricultural establishments that were classified as very low, low, moderate, severe and acute. This Index helps the evaluation of the outcome of public water security policies and the improvement of water infrastructure. Also, based on the data of wells inside the establishments, the volume of groundwater consumed by agriculture per river basin and aquifer was calculated and it was possible to identify which agricultural sector consumes more groundwater through these wells. It was concluded that (i) the main user of groundwater, via wells, in agriculture is livestock (cattle, poultry and swine) ; (ii) that due to climatic changes that will affect the semiarid the consumption of brackish and saline groundwater will have a structuring character in the water security of this region since the reduction of rainfall will limit the storage of rainwater in cisterns ; (iii) the sustainable management of rural aquifers is related to the adoption of sustainable practices by agricultural production.
