Résumé
Our research aims to study and evaluate three Algerian aromatic plants widely used in traditional medicine, namely, Mentha citrata Ehrh., Thymus algeriensis Boiss., and Pelargonium graveolens. At first, we extracted the essential oils from the studied plants by three methods ; namely hydrodistillation (HD), steam distillation (SD), and microwave distillation (MAD). We then obtained the crude extracts of the three plants by cold maceration in mixtures of methanol / water (80 / 20), and ether / petroleum ether (50 / 50). We recorded the best yield for M. citrata leaves in the raw extract. Subsequently, we performed a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the components of essential oils obtained in HD by GC-FID and GC-MS, and we have therefore found that the essential oil of M. citrata contains mostly linalool and linalyl acetate ; the essential oil of T. algeriensis, is rich in camphor, borneol and camphene, while the essential oil of P. graveolens contains particularly citronellol, geraniol, as well as citronellyl formate. In addition, we evaluated the amount of total polyphenols and total flavonoids contained in the crude extracts, and thus found that the best amount of polyphenols existed in the crude extract of P. graveolens, while the flavonoids were in the crude M. citrata extract. We used HPLC technique to evaluate phenolic compounds in crude extracts. On the other hand, we studied the antioxidant power of essential oils by two different methods, where the oil of T. algeriensis showed the best efficiency. Also, we explored the antioxidant potential of the crude extracts of the studied plants, and it is the leaves’extract of M. citrata which gave the best efficiency. We also studied the antimicrobial activity of essential oils, where the oil of T. algeriensis showed a strong influence on the fungi, while on bacteria, the influence was more marked for the oil of M. citrata. Finally, the cytotoxic activity of all the studied essential oils was tested against both HCT116 (colon cancer) and HepG2 (Human hepatocellular carcinoma), where the effect of T. algeriensis oil showed a very interesting and a better activity, especially against HCT116. As for the toxicity of crude extracts on the breast cancer cell (MCF7), the latter had a good impact, but it was the extract of T. algeriensis that was the most toxic
