Résumé
a quantitative a n a l y s i s of the d i s t r i but i o n a l behavior of Thymelaea h i r s u t a and it6 associated species, and the r e l a t i o n s h i p s of t h i s behavior t o environmental variables. Bymelaea h i r s u t a has been recently found t o be a p ssibler a w ma t e r i a l f o r t h e manufacture of high-quality paper. Species abundance was estimated i n 32 stands spanning most of the apparent physiographic and edaphic variations i n a 0,8 million hectare area i n the northeastern sector of the Western Desert of Egypt. C l u s t e r a n a l y s i s of t h e vegetation led t o the recogn i t i o n of nine c l u s t e r s comparable i n many cases to commu n i t i e s previously defined i n the study by various authors, These c l u s t e r s are distinguished along environmental gradi e n t s of decreasing clccium carbonate and increasing salin i t y and exchangeable cations and anions. S o i l separates, sand, silt and clay f r a c t i o n s , exert some influence on vegetational changes but at comparatively low l e v e l s of s t a t i s t i c a l significance.
