Résumé partiel
The present work aims to evaluate the groundwater resources and land use in El Faiyum and its vicinities, also understanding the spatial distribution of hydrochemical constituents of groundwater related to its suitability for agriculture and domestic use. The present thesis comprises the following chapters : 1-Chapter 1 : Introduction. 2-Chapter 2 : Geological and Hydrogeological setting. 3-Chapter 3 : Land uses. 4-Chapter 4 : Environmental impacts. 5-Chapter 5 : Assessment of the environmental impacts. 6-Chapter 6 : Surface and groundwater evaluation. 7-Chapter 7 : Summary & Conclusion. I- Introduction : The Study area is located southwest of Cairo by about 100Km and northwest of Beni Suef by about 30Km. It is limited between latitudes 29° 00/ and 29°30/ North and longitudes 30° 20/ and 31°10/ East with an area of about 1200Km². This area is separated from the Nile Valley by a narrow desert strip of about 35Km wide and 80M height known by as Nile-El Faiyum Divide. from west, the depression is bounded by alimestone ridge known as Gisr El Hadid, separating it from Wadi El Rayan depression. from north Qarun lake Gabel Qatrani from the northern boundary of the depression. The area under study is characterized by hot, long and dry summer and warm, short winter with scarce precipitation. Also, great temperature difference between summer and winter and between day and night characterizes this belt. II-Geological and Hydrogeological setting : A-Geological aspects : El Faiyum and its vicinities are occupied by sedimentary rocks belonging to Tertiary and Quaternary Eras. The surface cover has a thickness of about 848m. Tertiary basalt is exposed at Gebel Qatrani to the north of El Faiyum depression. In the subsurface, the deep boring carried out by oil companies in El Faiyum and Wadi El Rayan indicates that the stratigraphic column attained a thickness of about 1280m overlying the basement. This column is developed into lime and clay facies in its upper part while it is sandy and limy in its lower part.
