Présentation
Climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of droughts. Uganda is feeling the impacts through increased crop failure leading to food insecurity. Nevertheless, agriculture is the main source of livelihood in Uganda and it is mainly carried out by smallholder farmers. There are many ways by which smallholder farmers have been responding to drought in Uganda however, there have been limited studies conducted to understand if the strategies are sustainable, transformational or mal-adaptive on the ground. Through highly qualitative methods, this study analysed the adaptation strategies used by farmers to find out the extent that these could be categorised as sustainable, transformational or maladaptive. In-depth interviews with farmers and key informants, participatory methods and observations during the field visits were used in this fieldwork. The study found out that adaptation strategies could be placed in more than one category and also questioned the categories themselves.
