Résumé
A combination of field, documentary and analytic techniques were used to
explore the historical archaeology of the lower Lachlan region of New South
Wales. The core of the study concerns the transformation of the landscape by
the settlement of the area by European pastoralists and the subsequent instabilities that these transformations engendered. Special emphasis was placed on
the dominant economic activity, that is, wool growing. Archaeological techniques were used to record the surviving standing structures from this phase of
pastoralism. Various station records and Government reports provided graphic
evidence for the crises produced by European pastoralism.
