Home composting can be considered an emerging trend among strategies to prevent and reduce waste, both in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. Today, this ancient practice is once again being valued as another strategy to deal with the complex problem of managing biodegradable municipal waste. This paper aims to review and analyse composting manuals used to train citizens who perform this practice. In most campaigns aimed at promoting composting, manuals are delivered to users as a complement to training workshops. A literature search was conducted on the Internet and found almost 50 of these manuals, 35 of which were selected for analysis. The selection was made according to territorial representation, scope of campaigns and content quality criteria. The selection also included manuals from North America, Latin America and Northern Europe to contrast training content. First, editorial features of the publications are described. Second, information of installation, start up and maintenance of the composter is analysed. Third, recommendations on biodegradable materials that must be managed carefully or which are not recommended for composting are examined. In the fourth part, recommendations on commonly encountered compost problems and solutions are considered. Finally, the contents of the manuals are contrasted with scientific publications. The analysis carried out found differences between manuals regarding both contents and the process methodology. Among the issues discussed, we emphasis : the preparation of the bed of the composter, the feeding system, the turning and watering system, the temperature and moisture control and the proportion of "greens" and "browns" to maintain a nutrient balance. Finally, we highlight the variability found in the expected duration of the composting process. As a final thought, we suggest that the ideal manual should propose a process methodology which achieves a balance between three types of objectives : agronomic, which involves obtaining a high quality compost which is sanitized and stabilized ; environmental with regard to the prevention of waste, which permits the highest quantity of organic materials present in the home to be used ; and finally the functional, it has to be as easy as possible and to require minimal control and maintenance so that it may become a habit for the user
