The main objective of this project is to highlight the potential benefits generated by the “Nopal” or “Chumbera” (Opuntia ficus-indica) plant, as a biomass cupable of supplying multiple products : food and other products for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. At the same time its cultivation can generate benefits to the environment such as the recovery of non-productive soils, the capture of CO2 from the air and a highly efficient management of water and nutritional resouces. The ideas of Circular Bioeconomy and Sustainable Development Goals are described first as framework, to continue with a brief description of the plant, its History and taxonomy, describing its envioronmental adaptation mechanisms, as well as its benefits and services to the environment. The introduction ends with the commercial development of different products, describing their characteristics and benefits. The work proposes an integral valorization of Nopal in biorefinery facility, whitch emphasizes the use of all process currents, and the energy recovery of residual biomass to produce biogas. The definition of the possible products and processes for obtaining them consider the highest value and quality while using the lowest possible inputs esaily avaliable and trying to generate waste in a smaller proportion and with the lowest possible environmental impact. The anaerobic digestion process, its microbiology phases and the parameters to consider and monitor are described next. Followed by a brief description of the types of biodigesters ans a characterization of biogas and it’s Opuntia ficus-indica substrate is made throught the collection of different research and commercial experiencies.
