Résumé
Climate change and agriculture are interrelated to each other, both of which take
place on a global scale. Climate change affects agriculture in a number of ways, including
changes in average temperatures, rainfall, and climate extremes (e.g., heat waves) ;
changes in pests and diseases ; changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and groundlevel ozone concentrations ; changes in the nutritional quality of some foods ; and changes
in sea level. Climate change is already affecting agriculture, with effects unevenly
distributed across the world. Agriculture contributes to climate change by
(1) anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and (2) by the conversion of
non-agricultural land (e.g., forests) into agricultural land. Agriculture, forestry and landuse change contributed around 20 to 25% to global annual emissions in 2010

PROBLEM STATEMENT : Studies regarding the farmer’s response to climate change and its strategies towards the farm and farming life were very few and have not sufficiently contributed to the scientific field. In this cotext, the following questions arise – 1) How far the farmers are aware of the climate change on farm and farming life ? 2) What are the experience of the farmers towards climate change and its impact ? 3) What kind of strategies farmers have adapted in response to the climate change ?
To find the answers of these questions a study titled “Climate Change : A Study of Responses and Strategies Adopted by Farmers in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh” of India is undertaken to consider the following specific objectives : 1) To study the socio-economic profile of the farmers ; 2) To study the farmer’s awareness about climate change ; 3) To document the experiences of the farmers about climate change ; 4) To study the responses and strategies adopted by the farmers toward climate change ; 5) To suggest appropriate strategies to improve crop production based on climate change.
