Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the largest widely cultivated major crop in the world, and is the most important staple food for more than one-half of the world’s population. India is the second largest producer of rice after China, accounting for 20% of the world rice production. The world population is predicted to reach approximately 8 billion by 2030 (UN, 2004), and therefore, there is a need to further increase rice production by 40% in next 25 years. Rice is grown in a wide range of environments (photoperiod, temperature, and solar radiation) including areas where other crops might fail. But it has relatively few adaptations to water-limited conditions and is extremely sensitive to drought stress. Among various abiotic stresses drought is one of the basic factor for restricting crop production. Fluctuation in normal period of monsoon either delayed or early withdrawal affects the growing season of crops and causes detrimental effects on yield, whereas water stress usually has multiple effects on plant growth and development.

Keeping these problems in view, present investigation entitled “Genetics of drought tolerance, yield and its component traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under rainfed conditions” was carried out to estimate the combining ability effects of parents and hybrids, to study the nature and magnitude of gene effects in the inheritance of drought tolerance, yield and yield traits under rainfed condition, to study the nature and magnitude of heterosis and inbreeding depression and to select transgressive segregants for drought tolerance under rainfed condition in the F2 generation.

The experimental materials for present investigation consist of breeder seeds of eleven rice genotypes, out of which four having broad genetic base and well adapted to diversified conditions, were taken as testers (IR-36, HUR-105, Pant Dhan-105 and NDR-359) and seven were rainfed varieties (Baranai Deep, Birsa Dhan-105, Danteshwari, NDR-97, N-22, Sushk Samtrat and Vandana) taken as lines for making crosses following line × tester mating design to obtain 28 F1’s during Kharif-2012. Half of the F1 seeds along with the parents were grown at CRRI, Cuttack to get B1, B2 and F2 seeds. All six generations P1, P2, B1, B2, F1 and F2 were grown during Kharif-2013 at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, under two environments i.e. moisture stress (rainfed) and moisture non-stress (irrigated) to study genetics of yield and drought related traits.
