Tourism is one of the leading and top growing industries in the world. It contributes
US$7.2 trillion to world GDP (in 2015) i.e. 9.8% of the global GDP (WTTC, 2016). In South
Asia, tourism contributes to 7.4% to the GDP, which is second highest growth in Tourism in
the global sub-region context after Southeast Asia (7.9%). India too, is part of the South Asia
and has a growing tourism industry. In 2015, it contributed 6.23% (8.31 lakh crore) to the
national GDP and provided 8.7% (37.315 million jobs) of the total employment in India
(WTTC). Tourism along with progress passes on the economic, socio-cultural and ecological
benefits to the economy. And, all these benefits have forced planners, developers and
economy policy makers to use it as a tool for rural development.
The present study analysed the impact of rural tourism on the local community
development in Himachal Pradesh. And for this, six rural tourism villages have been selected
in Himachal Pradesh i.e. Naggar in Kullu, Baggi in Mandi, Pragpur in Kangra, Brua in
Kinnaur, Hewan in Shimla and Udaipur in Lahaul & Spiti. The results of the study have
helped to understand the concept and nature of rural tourism. The research study analyzed
the economic, socio-cultural and ecological impacts caused by rural tourism. It also examined
the profile of rural tourists visiting rural areas, their travel choice and underlying their
satisfaction with destination attributes. Further, the study understood the challenges of rural
tourism in mountain state of Himachal Pradesh and suggested suitable measures for the
sustainable development of rural tourism in the study area.
The research methodology adopted for the study is multifaceted and involved a
number of approaches. The sampling method for the study was multi-stage sampling. The
data has been collected using two schedules and analysed using suitable mathematical,
statistical, diagrammatic and graphical methods.
The overall thesis has been divided into eight chapters. It includes Introduction,
review of literature, research design, rural tourism & its status in Himachal Pradesh, profile
of the respondents, identifying impacts of rural tourism, nature of travel & satisfaction level
of tourists. And discusses the relevant areas of the study.
I am sure that the research study is a rich source of practical knowledge, explaining
the ground realities of the rural tourism in Himachal Pradesh. And, certainly assist the various
researchers, academicians, bureacrats, policy makers in the endeavours of rural community
development in the state and India.
