The thesis is structured in six chapters. Chapter one gives the rationale for the research, sets the scope and presents the sub-goals of the study. A summary of the research approach and methodology is given as well as the thesis structure. Chapter two gives an overview of urbanization and environmental impact of urbanization in India and research in the field of urban environment in the light of remote sensing. Chapter three presents the study of assessing the sprawl by using multi-spatial and temporal data. Chapter four explains impact of impervious surface through spatial metrics. Chapter five says about the quantification of the environment quality by measuring air pollution and green cover. Chapter six says over-all impact of urban on Gulbarga city
