Description
The present work was undertaken to study the patterns of biomass production and nutrient cycling in 4-and 8-year old high density plantations of Acacia nilot1ca, a native specie ; and Eucalyptus tereticornis and Leucaena leucocephala, the two exotic species planted at Hisar, situated in a semi-arid region of the north-west rn India. Allocation of above-ground biomass and product1vity 1n stemwood, bark, branch, fruit and leaf components, formed the topic of discussion in Chapter 1. This is followed by Chapter II, where seasonal pattern of l1tterfall 1s discussed. Chapter III deals with the pattern of ,nutrients release during the decomposition of leaf and twig litter studied hrough litter bag method, and also the nutrients dynamics of the standing litter. Chapter IV deals with the changes in macronutrionts, pH and Ee of soils as a result of vegetat10n development after a period of ’ II’ , : 4 and 8 years. Chapter V deals with the budget of nutrients in the ecosystem and ates of nutrient uptake. retention and transfer. The thesis starts with a general introduction and is concluded with a chapter on general discussion and conclusions. Apart from this, each chapter has its own discussion of results. Literature cited in the text is brought together at the end. Present study is important from the points of view of fuelwood production, and amelioration of soils as a result of v getation development by the three species.
