Préface
This investigation has been focused on the ecological aspects of the floodplain vegetation at Agra. This work has been undertaken, as the floodplain ecosystem has not gained much attention and the semiarid ecoclimatic stress coupled with the unprecedented overuse by man and his bovine population has led to immense destruction of floodplains The floodplain are subjected to flooding, si 1 ting and erosion during the monsoon period and adverse desiccating conditions during summers. These adverse conditions effects the vegetation pattern of this ecosystem. The study has been conducted for over a period of three years from August 1990 to December 1993.

This project was engaged with the following major objectives. 1. Selection of sites with varying biotic activities, topography and period of inundation 2. To analyse the abiotic variables. 3. To study the structure and comparison of the plant communities at all the three study sites. 4. To prepare an inventory of plants inhabiting the floodplains. 5. To determine the productivity of the plant communities at the study sites and their intercomparision. 6 . To study the seed bank of the floodplains during raining season. 7 . To evaluate the impact of increasing biotic pressure on the vegetation and the need for it’s proper management.
