Objectifs
The specific objectives of the study are ;
i) To evaluate the contribution and importance of livestock in the household
economy of different sizes of arms in Himachal Pradesh ;
ii) To study the growth pattern and regional variations in livestock population in
the State since 1971 and to study the changes in composition of total livestock
population by species, sex and by functional categories (breeding, works, milk
production, meat production, etc.) ;
iii) To study the socio-economic characteristics of the household pursuing various
types of farming systems and animal husbandry practices and the size and
composition of their livestock herds ;
iv) To study the feed-fodder sources, types and availability on various sizes of
farms in different agro-climatic zones of Himachal Pradesh and to analyse the
gaps between the supply and requirements of fodder and the role of CPRs in
this respect ;
v) To study the costs and returns from cows and buffaloes in various farming
systems pursued in different agro-climatic zones of Himachal Pradesh ; and
vi) to study the causes of low production and problems and constraints of
livestock development in different agro-climatic zone of Himachal Pradesh.
