Descriptif
The present study aims to gain better insight into the problems of agricultural development at a micro-level with a view to undeistand the existing farming systems. The purpose behind the identification of farming systems in the state is to examine what farmers do and why, ar^d to identify the constraints to increase crop and livestock production.-^ An understanding of the interactions within the system assists in the formulation of better programn.es for the integrated development of agriculture, forestry and related activitic s. The examination of linkages will help in establishing the place of each component in the rural development. Furthein.ore, since there is an urgent need for an appropriate land use policy in hilly areas to discourage unwise and wasteful use of land resources to promote ecoLogically sound farming systems, the micro-level stydies and planning woulo be of importance in increasing income and .employment and improving cropping systems for each homogeneous agro-climatic zone. In the past, most of the studies gave just a sketchy picture of hil l farming systems. This study is an attempt to give an integrated picture of farming systems in Himachal Pradesh
