The Subject of Phytochemistry is a fast developing field that has caught the
attention of researchers worldwide. Phytochemistry deals with the study of
secondary metabolites isolated from the plant kingdom, their characterization,
reactions, transformations and biological activities. Other areas where
phytochemistry has also played a significant role in synthesizing novel agriculture
products, nutraceuticals and food and seed for humans and animals. Plants are
sophisticated factories where a variety of chemical compounds are manufactured.
These derived products are used as medicines, pesticides, perfumes, fragrances and
other utility products. The systematic study of medicinal plants and its claimed use
in traditional medicine against a particular ailment not only enables to discover the
active substances responsible for that use but also opens interesting avenues for
further research.
Considering the above facts, this research work entitled, “Phytochemical
Studies of Verbesina encelioides (Cavanilles) Bentham & Hooker f. ex A. Gray and
Ageratum conyzoides L. and their Bactericidal Activity” deals with the exploration
of two species of Verbesina encelioides and Ageratum conyzoides for
pharmacological purpose. Both the selected plant species of Asteraceae family have
a large number of properties in terms of aesthetics and medicine. Traditionally both
plants have been used to cure many diseases like Dysmenorrhoea, Ringworm
infestation, Amenorrhoea, Anti-fungal, Skin diseases, Leprosy and also as an
Antidepressant, Analgesic, Anti-inflammatory, Aphrodisiac, Antiseptic,
Expectorant, Sedative and Diuretic agents.
