Objectifs
There is need to analyze and study the extreme weather events viz. poor rains causing drought and excessive widespread rains causing flood situation during a monsoon season over India. Significant poor rains in July caused meteorological drought over India in 2002. Subsequently it rained more than normal in July 2003 of normal monsoon 2003. In view of such inter-annual(2002-2003) and intra-seasonal(monsoon) extreme weather events over India, following are objectives ofthe present study. 1) To analyze rainfall data on different temporal scales (Day to day, weekly and seasonal) and spatial scales (sub-divisional and national). 2) To determine dynamical and energetic features of the atmosphere viz. wind field (flow pattern), pressure/geo-potential height, temperatures and humidity with the help of Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM). 3) To determine semi-permanent and synoptic features of atmosphere during Southwest monsoon (monsoon) viz. heat low, Mascarene high, low level westerly jet in the lower troposphere ; monsoon trough, tropical easterly jet and Tibetan high in the mid and upper tropospheric levels by an AGCM. 4) To infer the association of above mentioned features with excess and deficit rainfall during monsoon season. 5) To predict the rainfall and associated atmospheric features over Indian region.
