The thesis comprises of five chapters.
Chapter 1 gives the statement of the problem and briefly describes the overall decision making framework considering different perspectives. The irrigation system management in general and the relevance of remote sensing tools in the context of the present study are highlighted. The objectives and the details of the study area are also given in this chapter.
Chapter 2 presents a brief literature survey with special reference to the reservoir water management, system operations and decision support systems. The application of geo-informatics for delineation of reservoir water contour and mapping of irrigated area in the command areas and also the need for determining the active storage capacity in operation stage are presented in this chapter.
Chapter 3 covers the methodology for the reservoir water balancing using satellite data in an irrigation year, and also highlights the use of geo-informatics modelling for crop delineation in the command areas - both from global data sets and local sources. The chapter also details the estimation of crop water requirements as well as duty and delta practised by the irrigation engineers of India. The methods followed by field engineers for estimating the water demand of crops and drinking water requirements for cities are also explained. The chapter highlights the crops cultivated as envisaged in the original project document and also the present method of crop identification in the command areas based on the satellite data. An attempt has also been made to specify the distress year crops as semi-dry crop scenario for the water demands to be met by the proposed reservoir operation.
