Résumé partiel
The present investigation was planned to determine association of antioxidant status with energy level in non-descript goats from arid tracts during extreme environmental temperature periods (ETPs). Blood samples were collected to harvest serum during moderate, hot and cold ETPs. In each ETP, the male and female goats were categorized as 3-8 months ; 8-13 months and 13-18 months of age groups. Association of antioxidant status with energy level were appraised by determining non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants in the serum. Nonenzymatic antioxidants included vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione and enzymatic antioxidants included superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, catalase and peroxidase. Indices of energy level included glucose, glucose-6-phosphatase and hexokinase. The mean overall values of serum vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione of non-descript goats during moderate ETP (control) were 2.45±0.08 ; 23.90±0.10 ; 4.80±0.09 and 7.80±0.09 µmolL-1, respectively. The mean values were found to be significantly (p≤0.05) lower during hot and cold ETPs. Magnitude of decrement was observed to be greater during hot ETP than that in cold ETP. The mean overall values of serum superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, catalase and peroxidase of nondescript goats during moderate ETP (control) were 160.00±2.00 kU L-1 ; 9.00±0.18 kUL-1 ; 60.00±1.09 kUL-1and 45.00±0.10 mUL-1,respectively irrespective of sex and age. Significantly (p≤0.05) increased mean values of serum superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, catalase and peroxidase were observed during hot and cold ETPs as compared to moderate overall mean value. It was found that enhancement in the values during hot ETP was greater than that of cold ETP for each variable.
