The present investigation was carried out to appraise the extreme hot ambient temperature vis-à-vis antioxidant potential of liver and plasma iron status in Marwari sheep from arid tracts. To achieve the objectives of the investigation, blood and liver samples were collected from Marwari male and female sheep of 4 months to 10 months of age groups during congenial (months of October and November) and extreme hot (May, June and July) ambient temperature periods (ATPs)from private slaughter houses. The male and female Marwari sheep were categorized as 4-6 months ; 6-8 months and 8-10 months of age groups in each ambient temperature period (ATP). To accomplish the objectives, parameters were quantified in the liver and plasma (where ever applicable) during congenial and extreme hot ATPs. The parameters of antioxidant potential of liver included superoxide dismutase (SOD) ; catalase (CAT) ; glutathione reductase (GR) ; malondialdehyde (MDA) ; peroxidase (PO) ; vitamin E ; vitamin C and glutathione and parameters of plasma iron status incorporated plasma iron and total iron binding capacity. For each parameter, control mean value was obtained during congenial ATP and the mean value obtained during extreme hot ATP was compared from control value of respective parameter. Effect of gender and age group was also contemplated. Appraisal of the extreme hot ambient temperature vis-à-vis antioxidant potential of liver and plasma iron status was carried out on the basis of per cent changes in parameters during extreme hot ATP. Highly significant (p≤0.01) interactions of gender X age group ; ATPs X gender ; ATPs X age groups ; ATPs X gender X age groups for markers of liver antioxidant potential and plasma iron status divulged the supremacy of influences in each group. Extreme hot ATP caused a significant (p≤0.05) increase in the mean values of liver SOD, CAT, GR, MDA and PO and a significant ii (p≤0.05) decrease in the mean values of vitamin E, vitamin C and glutathione ; and plasma iron and total iron binding capacity as compared to respective congenial ATP mean value. Significant (p≤0.05) difference in the mean values between male and female Marwari sheep for each parameter denoted that gender impact was commanding.
