The present thesis poses and answers these points in the manner listed below (a) Variation in subsoil water table in canal irrigated tracts of the Punjab from year to year and the average rate of rise or fall per year. (b) How this variation has been affected by rainfall or irrigation and rainfall plus irrigation, covering the rainfall run-off studies as well, as its distribution. (c) What amount of rainfall can be dealt with by natural agencies such as surface drainage, evaporation and transpiration etc. without causing rise in watertable together with evolution of suitable relationship*connecting differentftracts. (d) Addition into the subsoil due to seepage from unlined canals and branches , study covering theoretical as well as quantitative aspects. (e) Design and spacing of surface and sub surface drains. (f) Hydro-dynamical determination of a sub-soil water-table profile as affected by rainfall and rainfall plus irrigation.

In the end, having known the extent and causes of water logging in the State , attempts have been made towards an analytical approach for solving this problem. It has also been rationally brought out that with different situations , unique problems are posed for which different solutions shall have to be worked out independently . Depending upon the nature of the subsoil strata , shallow open drains will have to be dug in a certain waterlogged tract , while tubewell pumping will be advisable in another and laying of subsurface drains in the third.
