Objectifs
Belur sub-basin and its adjoining regions in Salem district have been subjected to severe drought situations in the past. Further there has been substantial increase in the utilization of groundwater in this region, resulting in considerable lowering of groundwater level. The main objectives of the present study area are : • The hydrogeological characteristics of the hard rock terrain, • To understand meteorological, geomorphological and geological characteristics of the area which have a bearing on the occurrence of groundwater, • To delineate potential groundwater zones for groundwater development, o To determine the quality of groundwater and the usage of groundwater for domestic, public supply, irrigation and general industry purposes.

Hard rock hydrogeology in recent years assumes great importance due to the complexities of the flow system. Systematic attempts are being made in many parts of the world to understand the groundwater behaviour, flow regime and water balance, varying climatic conditions and basin configurations. Peninsular India provides vast scope for such investigations under varied climatic and geological conditions.

The present work deals with the geological, geomorphological, hydrogeological, geophysical, remote sensing and hydrogeochemical studies to evaluate water resources of Belur sub-basin aquifers comprising highly faulted and folded metamorphic rocks. From the geological field mapping, the major rock formations like charnockite, gneiss ± hornblende were identified which have been subjected to folding, faulting and deformation.

The author has taken the hydrogeological studies of Belur sub-basin to throw more light on the catchment area and on the possibility of giving an account on the regeneration of the flow of Vashista Nadhi. In addition, the structural pattern and its influence on the course of Vashista Nadhi with the help of electrical resistivity survey is discussed.
