Besides drought (water deficit) soil salinization and waterlogging are also notable environmental constraints in many parts of the world and crop emergence, growth and yield are found to greatly affected by these factors. In the present investigation the effectiveness of presowing soaking treatment in induction of salinity and waterlogging stress tolerance at germination stage was also investigated. Further, an attempt was made to study fate of different biochemical constituents in the salt stressed and waterlogged plants under the influence of seed pretreatments with the four plant growth regulators. This work represents a continuation of the research work which was carried out by the candidate for his M. Phil degree and embodied in the dissertation entitled, ‘Influence of Chloro choline chloride (CCC) pre-treatment on physiology of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) submitted to Shivaji University, Kolhapur in 1989.

There is no organized information in the books published on groundnut regarding the effects of PGRs on different facets of this crop hence in order to understand the work regarding basic problems about interactions of groundnut with plant growth regulators and influence of various natural and synthetic growth regulators on different aspects such as germinability, vegetative growth, reproductive growth, yield and physiological changes in groundnut is reviewed in detail. This forms the substance of the first chapter ‘Review of Literature’. The second chapter comprises of methods used for germination studies, field experiments laid down for the study of growth and yield parameters, pot experiments performed for water and salt stress studies as well as various methods used to study the different biochemical constituents in groundnut plants. The significant findings of the present investigation are presented and discussed in the light of available literature in the third chapter ‘Results and Discussion’. The findings of the present investigation are briefly summarized in the fourth chapter ‘Summary and Conclusions’. The literature cited in the thesis is systematically listed with details in the last part of the thesis ‘Bibliography’.
