Résumé
Cape Verde, located in the North Atlantic Ocean on the West African coast, is a small archipelago, which due to the climatic context in which it is inserted, is particularly vulnerable to the occurrence of extreme events and their impacts. Considering these conditions, and aiming to contribute to the increase of local knowledge and development, this Dissertation aims to assess the impact of climate change on the hydrological regime of the Island of Santiago (Cape Verde) in relation to the greater or lesser possibility of occurrence of extreme phenomena associated with deficit (drought) or surplus of precipitation (floods). For this, trends in rainfall, temperature and relative humidity series for the last 40 years are analyzed using some gauge stations distributed by the Island of Santiago through the non-parametric methods of Mann- Kendall and Sen’s slope. Considering the trends obtained and restricting the study to a particular case on the Island, it will focus on the issue of intense precipitation in the capital city of the Country, Praia, as these have increased floods with high annual recurrence causing social, environmental and economic constraints. Therefore, and due to the lack of local hydrological knowledge, mainly in the characterization of project rainfall, the present work is also dedicated to the construction of the IDF curve for the city of Praia based on recent local data.
