Résumé
An investigation was made to characterize and evaluate the soil resource of Karekal-1 microwatershed in North-eastern dry zone of Karnataka under semi-arid tropics for their morphological, physical, chemical, fertility characteristics and suitability for major crops. Among eight mapping units obtained three different landforms viz., upland, midland and lowland revealed the slope varying from very gentle sloping (1-3%) to gentle sloping (3-5%). The soils have dark brown (7.5 4/2) and very dark greyish brown (10YR 3/2) colour. The physical characteristics like soil texture, BD, porosity and MHWC ranged from sandy clay loam to clay, 1.32 to 1.52 Mg m3, 40.32 to 47.32 per cent, and 31.97 to 47.69 per cent, respectively. Chemical characteristics like pH (1:2.5), EC in soil : water ratio, OC., N, P2O5, K2O, S, CaCO3, CEC, BS. and ESP ranged from neutral to alkaline in reaction, 0.12 to 0.47 dS m-1 (non-saline), 3.30 to 5.30 g kg-1, 118.40 to 137.10 kg ha-1, 16.00 to 25.35 kg ha-1 , 241.80 to 429.00 kg ha-1, 17.62 to 22.70 kg ha-1 , 5.77 to 10.33 per cent, 27.33 to 51.80 cmol (p+) kg-1, 75.74 to 92.25 per cent and 5.41 to 10.19 per cent, respectively. The agriculture land of the area qualifies for land capability classes IIIewf, IIIewsf, IVsf, IVef and IVesf. Generally, higher elevated (upland) area were marginally suitable (S3) for cultivation of field crops like cotton, sorghum, and pigeonpea presently, lowland and midland were also moderately suitable for cultivation these crops with moderate limitations of drainage and fertility aspects. Whereas horticulture crop like mango, guava and sapota were not suitable (N) in upland because of sever limitation of depth. Whereas In lowland and midland these crops were moderately suitable with moderate limitations
