Résumé
Performance of major fruit crops viz., mango, guava and sapota in Dharwad district of Northern Karnataka were analysed for the period from 1991-92 to 2009-10 using time series data as well as primary data. The statistical tools namely Growth Rate, Markov chain analysis, Multiple linear regression analysis and Tabular analysis were employed. The results revealed that the growth in area, production and productivity for mango were found positive (7.45%, 8.02% and 0.99% respectively). Area, production and productivity under guava were also found positive (3.39%, 3.88% and 2.16% respectively). Besides area, production and productivity under sapota too found positive (14.18%, 12.96% and 0.77% respectively). The results of the Markov chain analysis revealed that the area under mango, guava and sapota in Dharwad district has showed stability over the years. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the major factors responsible for the changes in area under major fruit crops over the years were price, population, rainfall, net irrigated area, fertilizer, number of factories and number of commercial banks. Tabular analysis was employed to study the major production and marketing constraints in the cultivation of major fruit crops. Major problems faced by farmers in the production of major fruit crops such as mango, guava and sapota were non-availability of labour, irrgular power supply, lack of irrigation and rainfall. Major problems faced by farmers in the marketing of major fruit crops such as mango, guava and sapota were lack of storage facilities, high commission charges, high transportation cost and low price.
