A field experiment was conducted at the College of Horticulture, University of Horticultural Sciences Campus, GKVK, Bengaluru, during Summer 2015 and Kharif 2015, to study the growth and productivity of medicinal and vegetables crops and quality of medicinal crops in intercropping system and cost economics of cropping systems in alfisols of eastern dryzone of Karnataka under irrigated condition.The experiment comprised of 14 treatments, with sole crop of 2 medicinal crops (coleus and gardenrue), 4 vegetable crops (French bean, okra, cluster bean and carrot) and combinations of medicinal and vegetable crops adopting RCBD design with 3 replications. The growth and yield of gardenrue and coleus were not affected due to intercropping with vegetables. The sole crop of gardenrue recorded better growth, yield and quality in both the seasons (2015), while in intercropping systems, cluster bean intercropped with gardenrue recorded the maximum fresh herb and dry herb yield (13.21 and 4.32 t ha-1 respectively). Sole crop of coleus recorded the highest fresh root yield (9.00t ha-1), dry root yield (1176.3 kg ha-1) and forskolin yield (13.00 kg ha-1) in both the seasons. But with respect to intercropping of vegetables French bean intercropping in coleus resulted in maximum fresh root yield (7.45 t ha-1) dry root yield (978.3 kg ha-1) and forskolin (10.03 kg ha-1).The intercropping system of Coleus + french bean and Garden rue + okra intercropping systems recorded the maximum LER (1.55) and had higher yield advantage. Coleus + french bean and Garden rue + french bean intercropping systems recorded the maximum ATER (2.43 and 1.86 respectively) and had higher yield advantage.
