Résumé
The main objective of this research work is to study the occurrences of rainfall and its distribution in West Bengal with special emphasis on the meteorological causes involved behind them. As the State gets 71# to 82# of its annual total amount of rainfall in the southwest monsoon season (June - September) only, special attention has been given to the study of rainfall during this season. The monsoon trough, which oscillates in a north-south direction, Is one of the main controlling factors to the distribu tion of rainfall over the State in this season. The variability and distribution of rainfall in relation to the different positions of the monsoon trough have been examined. Other relevant statistical information such as monthly, seasonal, annual and decadal variations of rainfall during the monsoon and other seasons, diurnal va riations, intensity of rainfall ranging from 1 hour to 24 hours, present trend of SW monsoon seasonal and annual rainfall etc. hare been examined and discussed
