Silk production is a profitable, labour and water intensive industry. Almost entire commercial silk production is based on mulberry silk and therefore its chain starts with mulberry cultivation which is called as moriculture. The leaves of the mulberry plant are solely the food for the domesticated form of caterpillar, known as silkworms, which produces silk. This industry has been very significant for the economy of India, which is the second highest silk producing country in the world, since silk provides high profits. Recently, Indian Ministry of Textile and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) through the SILKS program have identified many areas for potential mulberry cultivation in order to increase silk production. Different districts with suitable climate for mulberry cultivation have highlight in their Vision 2020 program the intention to increase mulberry harvested areas for higher silk production. Given these premises, the aim of this thesis is to evaluate the impacts on water security given by the irrigation need due to the forecasted increase in moriculture areas. In the end, the main goal is to provide informative support for local level decision by evaluating water footprints, land footprints, economic water productivity, water scarcity analyses and food security conditions. Computed mulberry irrigations needs are referred to different Indian climate zones. Results show that, in general, the blue water necessary for mulberry cultivation is higher than the one necessary for staple crop production, such as maize, millet and sorghum. The impacts on water security are mostly observed where potential mulberry areas are clustered and the percentage of the potential areas in each district over total harvested areas at district level is higher such as in Mizoram District. Water scarcity analysis is computed considering the baseline scenario without increase in mulberry harvested areas
