Résumé
The idea of sustainability has been investigated, promoted and criticized during the last decades for long. Sustainability is excessively expansive, vague and financially focused that in today’s world seems to be as just a brand. There has also been an undeniable interconnected effect between ecological, social and economic factors when we talk about the idea of sustainability and there has been enough of research dedicated to these areas. When it comes to the idea of sustainability how this idea is defined in developing Middle Eastern countries can be very interesting since these places are where the main income of these countries are from the non-renewable energies which is oil. This by itself can be considered a huge contradiction of sustainability in this context. These cities are trying to have a rapid expansion to keep up with the times. Consequently, this irregular growth of these cities can cause them to have many sociological, ecological and economic problems. For the countries specifically in the gulf region, the idea and ambition of “the biggest”, “the best” and “the most important” projects are considered as a goal and competition to win. For us it was interesting to investigate and evaluate the idea of sustainability specifically in this area and try to understand these contradictions and eventually analyze the “Largest artificial lake” in this area, which is “Chitgar artificial lake”, located in Tehran, Iran. This project was specifically very intriguing since in a country with the main issue of water shortage, the largest artificial lake has been built and this had some ecological and social impact on the region. In this research, the aim was to analyze the consequence and contradictions of sustainability in gulf region with the focus on ecology and social justice for moving towards sustainability and equity.
