Participatory varietal selection in rabi sorghum

Varietal Selection Rabi Sorghum

UKAID Department for International Development (R4D)

Titre : Participatory varietal selection in rabi sorghum

Pays : India Geographic Area : Hyderabad

Projet de recherche pour le Développement :

DFID Programme : Plant Sciences Research

Organismes de mise en œuvre  : Lead Institutes : National Research Centre for Sorghum (India)

Durée : Start Date : 01-07-1999 — End Date : 30-06-2004

Objectifs  : Physiology of drought resistance in rabi sorghum understood, plant genes coding for resistance transferred into adapted genetic background and tolerant strains promoted in target areas.

Descriptif
Developmental problems are : Rabi sorghum is grown over 6m ha but the yield levels are very low. There is a slow turnover of cultivars and farmers grow a very restricted set of local varieties. Most of the area is occupied by a single cultivar, ,Maldandi,. Restricted choice cultivars (because released varieties lack farmer-preferred traits) that farmers grow in shallow to medium soils under rainfed situations, leads to significant losses from drought conditions. Vulnerability of crop to biotic stresses because of lack of diversity among farmers’ cultivars. Lack of cultivar diversity restricts the use of optimal levels of inputs, because the available cultivars are non-responsive to inputs.

Total Cost to DFID : £137,413
