Sustainable Job Creation and Growth for Increased Food Security and Resilience in Eritrea

Erythrée

Titre : Sustainable Job Creation and Growth for Increased Food Security and Resilience in Eritrea

Pays : Eritrea

Date adoption : 12/12/2019

Objectif (s)
* To improve sustainable and productive use, access and management of water, soil and of other natural resources critical to the creation of jobs ; * To increase agricultural intensification and diversification in irrigation farms in targeted areas with an emphasis on climate-smart agriculture (in particular in the irrigation areas around the major dams in the Western development zone ; opportunities to extend the focus also to the Central and Eastern Development Zone will be explored) ; * To strengthen small and medium agri-businesses, mainly managed by youth and women, through improved access to finance and business development support services.

Description
The project aims to support sustainable jobs and promote inclusive green growth in agriculture and agri-business in Eritrea. In doing so, it seeks to enhance food security and resilience of rural communities, with a special focus on youth and women. The project will contribute to the extension of irrigation infrastructure and facilities to the end users, development of the land for irrigation as well as soil and water conservation upstream. Inputs and services, including seeds and fertilisers, agricultural machinery and farm tools, are expected to contribute to increasing crop and livestock production. This will contribute to increase agricultural intensification and diversification for the targeted small and medium farmers. The provision of adequate extension services should be also ensured to provide backstopping and enhance the capacities of smallholder farmers. Moreover, access to credit is envisaged to support young and women entrepreneurs to start up and/or expand small and medium agri-businesses, thus generating employment opportunities, increasing value addition and purchasing products from the farmers in turn, thus strengthening linkages to markets.
