Présentation
Global food demand is increasing, especially with regard to animal products, therefore global livestock production has to rely on extensively on antimicrobial use (AMU) to comply with rising consumer demands. Antimicrobial drugs are a common resource used to treat bacterial pathogens in both afflicted livestock and humans. However, due to their over use and misuse the frequency of detection of antimicrobial resistant bacterial pathogens has been increasing with higher prevalence of treatment failure occurring. Multi-drug antimicrobial resistance (AMR) isolates have been detected from the poultry sector but little is known about the true extent and dissemination of this problem, especially in North Africa. Therefore, this consortium of Swedish and Egyptian partners proposes to develop new and optimize the already-existing tools to detect and characterize AMR in multiple reservoirs. We aim at establishing an international collaboration with a One Health group of clinical, veterinary, and microbiology experts to build a network where methods, techniques and knowledge can be developed and disseminated. Ultimately, we will produce an AMR dataset with phenotypic and genomic data to help in the establishment of future research Middle-East AMR projects to aid in the global surveillance and reduction of antimicrobial resistance. The current proposal intends to promote building a network of relevant actors from Sweden, Egypt and beyond to broaden the scope of the collaboration.
