Titre : Ensure protection of livelihoods and acceptable food consumption of vulnerable populations at risk of extreme food insecurity due to drought (Ethiopia)

Pays /Région : Ethiopia

Code projet : 21-RR-FAO-004

Durée : Project start : 07 Apr 2021 | Project end : 06 Oct 2021

Présentation
This $2.65 million FAO project is an extension of the FAO project under the December tranche of this AA allocation (see 20-RR-FAO-034). The main objective is to mitigate declines in food consumption and loss of livelihoods. Among other activities, FAO will provide treat 350,000 animals against diseases, provide animal feed to 32,000 animals and provide cash to 16,000 at-risk households. The provision of unconditional cash packages will cushion vulnerable families from adverse impacts of drought ; they will be able to meet their immediate needs without resorting to negative coping mechanisms. The veterinary campaign for livestock will help animals survive during the drought and remain productive assets. Infectious diseases can spread very fast during a drought and when livestock become ill their milk and meat becomes unfit for human consumption which then impacts human nutrition. Finally, the supplementary feed will also contribute to ensuring animals - and thereby people’s livelihoods - survive and continue to produce milk for human consumption even when pastures become severely depleted due to drought. Altogether, the project will assist a total of 175,000 people, including 47,302 women and 41,947 girls.
