Descriptif
In the semi-arid areas of Eritrea Prosopis (juliflora) is spreading at an alarmingly fast pace affecting both the country’s natural resource base and rural livelihoods. Rural communities in Eritrea are convinced the species is a direct threat to household food security and want it to be eradicated. This PhD study assesses the plant’s impact on various local ecosystems and livelihoods, it draws lessons from other countries and presents a Prosopis management plan, which seeks to halt the spread. The study also provides a critical discussion about the perceptions and views towards Prosopis among scientists versus those among rural communities. It finally challenges the "eradication by utilisation" approach, which has been so widely recommended.
