WATER FOR AFGHANISTAN

Water Mapping Afghanistan

Danida - Agence danoise pour le développement international

Titre : WATER FOR AFGHANISTAN

Pays : Afghanistan

Code projet : 20-02-DTU

Période d’exécution : Start date : 1 March, 2021 // End date : 28 February, 2026

Présentation
Water For Afghanistan addresses the basic needs of some of the most fragile communities on Earth. Afghanistan suffers from an arid climate and poor understanding of water availability. Where water is available, it is often polluted, muddy or saline to a degree making it unsuitable for water supply without advanced treatment. To make things worse, the actual projections of climate change are unknown for the region but likely to increase the stress on water resources and its availability. Using state-of-the-art remote sensing (earth observations) technology, our project will create an unprecedented understanding of the water resource availability, and impacts from climate change in Afghanistan. To supplement the remote observations, we will map the groundwater availability and quality in Kabul Basin to allow for planning and securing water for the most densely populated region in Afghanistan. The water quality mapping will inform our development of new robust advanced water treatment technology. Membrane technology exist today for low cost purification of heavily polluted water. We will modify the technology to allow for local maintenance and better performance in Afghanistan. With the on ground experience from DACAAR we will make sure our data and technical solutions can be implemented and benefit the Afghan people as early as possible in the project. Our project will build capacity for continued water research in Afghanistan by educating researchers in Afghanistan and train technical and scientific staff to make future developments providing water for Afghanistan. We will build new lab facilities, test facilities and a data hub for sharing water resource and water quality data. Finally, we will develop a sustainability assessment tool that can measure efforts in water management and treatment against the UN Sustainability Development Goals and Planetary Boundaries.
