Strengthening Agro-sylvo-pastoral Innovation Systems in the North of Cameroon

Titre : Strengthening Agro-sylvo-pastoral Innovation Systems in the North of Cameroon

Pays : Cameroun

Durée : 10/2020 - 09/2024

Contexte  : In the North of Cameroon, livestock, agriculture and protected areas use the same territory of 65 000 km2. The major challenge for the agricultural sector is to secure access to land while preserving a sustainable and balanced use of natural resources.

Objectifs : The objective of the project therefore is to strengthen the agro-sylvo-pastoral innovation systems that exist in the project area, particularly, their processes of inclusive planning, negotiation, co-creation and implementation of technical, organisational and social innovations.

The innovation systems are not functioning well or are not sufficiently equipped to solve the problems of today and tomorrow. The systems are mostly managed in the context of agricultural, livestock or conservation projects led by government, national agricultural research organizations, international non-governmental organizations or local non-governmental organizations. The impact of these projects might not be sustainable beyond each project’s lifespan.

The expected impact of ReSI-NoC is improvement of the livelihoods of the people through harmonious management of the landscapes, allowing integration of agriculture and livestock and the management of natural ecosystems.

Implementation will follow three steps : 1) diagnosis of population dynamics, livelihoods’ activities, impact on natural resources, evolution of climate and impact on practices, and an in-depth institutional analysis of the existing agricultural innovation systems ; 2) establishment of innovation platforms (or other similar mechanisms) bringing together people at value chain and landscape levels ; 3) experimentation, adaptation and diffusion of technical, organisational and social innovations using a participatory approach.
