The Gaalkacyo - Garowe road is recognized as a crucial transport corridor in Somalia’s road network. The road connects Gaalkacyo in Galmudug State with Garowe, the capital of Puntland region in Somalia’s North, and has a length of two hundred and forty kilometres. The Gaalkacyo - Garowe Road is a vital transport corridor in Somalia, which provides vital support to the people living Galmudug and Puntland. The road supports a high level of economic activity within the two regions, enabling their residents to sustain their livelihoods. It also serves as a major link connecting Somalia’s North and South regions, providing access to the Port City of Bossaso. The overall project objective is to support economic development in Somalia by improving the transport connectivity in the country through re-constructing a section of the Gaalkacyo-Garowe Road. UNOPS will engage with a technical assessment of the condition of the road, project manage some of the rehabilitation works of the road and deploy capacity -building activities for the Puntland Highway Authority, so that it is possible to benefit from a transfer of skills to the local authorities and direct on-the-job training on contract management, rehabilitation supervision, and engineering supervision.
