Résumé
This project aimed to improve the understanding of reproductive health issues of importance to Aboriginal women, a previously under-researched area. A mixed methods approach was used and involvement of women in participating communities prioritised. Patterns of contraception use, preconception care access and women’s experiences in accessing reproductive health services were described, and formation of pregnancy intentions explored. As part of this project, a regional preconception care protocol was developed and a holistic, rights-based approach to reproductive health service improvements proposed. This work provides a foundation for future work to improve reproductive health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
