The problems of shortage of agricultural irrigation water resources and sloppy irrigation patterns have become important factors limiting the sustainable development of agriculture in the oasis region of Hexi.Edible sunflower,as a drought,salinity and infertile tolerant cash crop,has great water saving potential and is now widely grown in the oasis region of Hexi.In this paper,based on a water deficit irrigation experiment of edible sunflower conducted in the cold irrigation area of Hexi Oasis in 2020,we investigated the response mechanisms of edible sunflower physiological growth characteristics,water consumption characteristics,yield,quality and water use efficiency to water deficit.Four water gradients were established,namely,full irrigation(75%-85%field water holding capacity(FC))and mild(65%-75%FC),moderate(55%-65%FC),and severe(45%-55%FC)water deficit,including one full irrigation treatment(CK)and nine water deficit treatments,the latter were:mild water deficit at seedling stage(T1),mild water deficit at seedling stage+mild water deficit at maturity stage(T2),mild water deficit at seedling stage+moderate water deficit at maturity stage(T3) ;Moderate water deficit at seedling stage(T4),moderate water deficit at seedling stage+mild water deficit at maturity stage(T5),moderate water deficit at seedling stage+moderate water deficit at maturity stage(T6) ;Severe water deficit at seedling stage(T7),severe water deficit at seedling stage+mild water deficit at maturity stage(T8),severe water deficit at seedling stage+moderate water deficit at maturity stage(T9).The main findings were as follows.(1)The mean soil temperature of edible sunflower 0-25 cm under different water deficit treatments showed the following patterns:severe water deficit>moderate water deficit>light water deficit>adequate irrigation.In the same reproductive period,the daily variation of soil temperature at 5 cm below the film was larger,and the daily variation of soil temperature at 25 cm was more stable.(2)The edible sunflower plant height,stem thickness and dry matter accumulation showed an"S"type trend under different water deficit treatments,and the leaf area index(LAI)showed a"single peak"trend.At the end of the seedling stage,plant height,stem thickness,LAI and dry matter accumulation decreased by8.48%-24.53%,2.72%-23.23%,5.10%-24.49%and 8.73%-23.72%,respectively,compared with CK under different water deficit treatments.The rate of decrease increased with the increase of moisture deficit.After getting water recovery at budding and flowering,mild water deficits at seedling stage(T1,T2,T3)were able to produce fully compensated recovery growth with significant increases in plant height,stem thickness,LAI and dry matter accumulation,which were not significantly different from CK by the end of flowering(P>0.05) ;the remaining water deficit treatments were always significantly lower than CK(P<0.05)in all indicators.At maturity,water deficit had no effect on plant height and stem thickness,but reduced LAI and dry matter accumulation,which ranged from 7.58%-44.01%and8.69%-26.71%,respectively,compared with CK.
