"... we extended the study of cavernous weathering formation beyond physicochemical features and explored the biotic features contributing to its formation. ... Our analysis suggests a systematic spatial pattern whereby rock instability areas along the slope correspond with cavernous weathering features. ... We propose a new conceptual model describing hyper-arid rock slope evolution as the outcome of transport and weathering cycles. ... Here, we combined archeological, microbiological and geological methods to characterize and date the BRC in arid environments. To this end, rocks from the well-documented Byzantine archeological site, Shivta, and the nearby slopes were sampled. ... In this research, we note that in arid and hyper-arid regions, subaerial lithotrophic biofilm mitigates geomorphic processes more than promotes them. We revise the common dogma and suggest a new model for cavernous weathering development that takes into account both the biotic and a-biotic conditions. ..." — from the abstract.
