Research on village distribution is the core work of optimizing rural unit production-living-ecological space in Territorial Spatial Planning,as well as the basic work of promoting Rural Vitalization Strategy by categories.When optimizing village distribution in Northwest China,it is necessary to consider not only the principles of people-oriented and adapting measures to local conditions,but also the limited conditions of water supply in arid region.Based on the characteristics of the arid region of Northwest China and from the perspective of the integration of natural resource endowments and villagers’ wishes,this paper proposes a human-water-land coordination analysis framework for the optimization of village distribution,which provides a new idea for the spatial optimization of rural units.Taking Shizuishan City as the research target,a study on optimizing village distribution in the arid region of Northwest China is carried out.The main contents and conclusions are as follows :(1)Divide the types of villages based on natural resource endowments.Based on the four types of villages from the National Strategic Planning for Rural Vitalization(2018-2022),this study clarifies the principles and methods for classification and uses the village classification model to divide villages into characteristic protection,suburban integration,and general villages.On this basis,combined with the characteristics of villages in the arid region of Northwest China,an evaluation system is also established from the three rural development factors of “people”,“water” and“land” to evaluate the suitability of the village distribution.Then the Ward hierarchical clustering method is used to divide the general villages into agglomeration and upgrading type and relocation and evacuation type.(2)Using the grounded theory method,this paper summarizes the characteristics of the development status of four types of representative villages,and summarizes the villagers’ wishes for optimizing village distribution.The research found that:characteristic protection villages present the characteristics of emphasizing the development of characteristic industries and neglecting historical and cultural protection,suburban integration villages present the characteristics of disordered village development under the effect of urbanization,and agglomeration and upgrading villages present lack of integration of elements and weak endogenous motivation,and relocation and evacuation villages present the characteristics of facing decline with the weak development foundation.In order to promote rural development,the villagers propose four wishes : the willing of protection and development,the willing of urbanrural interaction,the willing of renovation and improvement and the willing of relocation
