Résumé
Drought is one of the most common types of abiotic stress and is characterized by the lack of precipitation over a long period of time compared to average precipitation in a certain area. Drought stress negatively affects the growth and development of plants during their vegetation. Over time, plants have developed several antioxidant mechanisms to remove toxic components that accumulate during drought stress. Some of the enzymes that plants accumulate have antioxidant activity and by increasing antioxidant activity, drought stress tolerance may increase. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of extreme drought on relative water content (RWC), total protein content and activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX) in caper seedling leaves. Drought stress significantly affects all measured properties. The RWC in leaves as well as the total soluble protein content decreased significantly, while the activity of SOD and POX increased with drought intensity.
