Résumé
Global warming and the rainfall regime modification due to climate change have been increasing the vulnerability of the African continent to widespread poverty and cyclical and chronic famines. In Cape Verde, the dependence of agriculture on rains prioritises the issue of food security as a central element in the well-being of populations and political stability. Cyclical fluctuations in livestock numbers are a necessary and cultural component of climate adaptation but induce significant revenue losses. The spatial distribution of rainfall, associated with frequent occurrences of dry mist and its natural and environmental constraints, require intervention to define priority actions and adaptation measures to mitigate the direct impacts of climate change. The dissertation aims to study the transhumant grazing system practised in the Tarrafal plateau (Santiago, Cape Verde) and to prospect its future sustainability in a context of climate change. The characterisation of the grazing system was done based on a survey of 50 households distributed in and out of the Tarrafal Plateau. Also, a geographic study of the grazing relating land uses and infrastructures was carried out. The survey aimed to characterise the households socioeconomically, the type and composition of livestock, the annual management of cattle and their relationship with the plateau and productive aspects of the grazing system. The results show a decrease in the number of herds, especially those of equidae that lost their socioeconomic value, due to the abandonment of isolated agricultural patches that are difficult to reach by farmers. A higher number of cattle is reported in the male-headed households and a higher number of goats in female-headed families The geographic analysis of the study area revealed the suitable places for the transhumance management of cattle and the location of new supporting infrastructures. A set of proposals is made to increase the sustainability of the transhumant grazing system in a climate change scenario, to reduce the loss of income of the farmers and improve the f food security of the populations.
