Improving food assistance in Tigray, Ethiopia

Titre : Improving food assistance in Tigray, Ethiopia

Pays /Région : Ethiopie
Localisation : Tigray

Date : July – December 2021

Development & Peace – Caritas Canada is supporting Catholic Relief Services – Ethiopia with a six-month humanitarian food assistance response in Tigray region, Ethiopia.

In November 2020, armed conflict broke out in the Tigray region of Ethiopia between federal forces and regional security forces leading to extreme humanitarian need, with refugees fleeing to Sudan and widespread displacement throughout northern Ethiopia. Ongoing hostilities continue to impact the safety and wellbeing of millions of civilians whilst constraining humanitarian access.

It is estimated that over 350,000 people are facing catastrophic food insecurity levels. This project aims to increase immediate food consumption and reduce negative coping strategies by providing six monthly food baskets to 1,500 households (approximately 10,500 people).

Each month households will receive wheat, pulses and oil. Pregnant and lactating women and children will additionality receive FAMIX, a nutritional supplement.
